Why You Should Start a Poker Blog
There are numerous benefits to the poker player on why they should also follow my lead and blog about their poker experiences. Let’s discuss a few of them now.
Blogging is a personal hobby of mine, and I have kept diaries on and off almost 10 years. Specifically online I started a personal journal in 2003, followed by a political blog in 2007 and a self help blog in 2008. I finally settled on what is definitely my most successful blog, my poker blog which I opened in March 2009. Because I love to write, it really is a labour of love for me.
Keeping a journalistic record of your thoughts on poker is a great way to get things clear in your mind. We all search for clarity of thought, and even if the actual post you create is somewhat muddled up you will benefit greatly from expressing your thoughts and getting it out into the open. If you have taken a particularly torturous bad beat, writing through the hand will help you get over it. You may also spot a part of the hand you played correctly or incorrectly and you will be able to dissect the hand and then move on, hopefully a little wiser next time from what you have managed to learn from analysing the hand.
A successful poker blog can also offer income opportunities for you. If your blog is sufficiently well-presented, and constantly updated with good content, you may find yourself able to successfully offer affiliate advertising for the poker rooms and make money from players that sign up to the poker rooms through your blog. People who visit your blog will come to trust that you give an expert opinion (even if you do not consider yourself an expert) and regularly visit your blog for advice, guidance and often if you say something is a good offer they will respond to it and you can make money. You should therefore always make sure that you only recommend things that you believe in, in order to repay the trust that your readers place in you. This will keep them coming back to read future postings, which is essential as there is nothing worse than an unread blog!
When writing for my blog I force myself to write helpful strategy articles about poker. This makes me go and research into an idea, and then write it out in the article. I have then learnt something that I can use on the tables that has improved my poker game. Your blog readers will hopefully make useful comments on your blog and stir up a debate on the concepts you have written about. There is no better way than discussing poker with friends to learn, so this can be a fantastic way of developing your understanding of the game.
If you have a good result live or online, your blog is a place that people can come to communicate with you and learn about you. A poker site who is interested in sponsoring a player may just look at the great job you are doing promoting poker and that might be the difference in choosing you to work with rather than someone else. Having a blog really emphasises your love for the game. Blogging gives something back and poker players love to read about poker, this makes blogs a great way to communicate with like minded people. Running your poker blog will also diversify your poker involvement. Some players get bored grinding it out on the tables and sometimes taking a break and writing helps players keep a perspective and recharge their batteries.
From communicating with others, possibly even making an income, to analysing your play and getting feedback from others there is only benefits to be enjoyed from running your own poker blog. Have I convinced you yet? I hope so. Happy blogging.
